Think Local
With nearly 400 completed forms entered into the prize draw on the launch day, I think we can consider it a huge success.
In the dappled sunshine, against the backdrop of the Maeldune centre with lovely music provided by the Plume Adult Band and Choir, I hope that those of you who were able to attend the launch agree that it was a lovely event that offers great potential for the future.
As we collected the forms to put into the draw, we heard about some teething problems, ie for some shops, starting it on a Saturday, the busiest day of the week, was a problem because of the time taken explaining the campaign to customers. The other feedback was that most shops would have preferred to have received the forms earlier in the week so that both staff and customers could get used to the campaign and how it works.
The data collected on the customer survey forms is invaluable. Jenny Lewsey’s office at Maldon District Council will be responsible for entering the information on a database so that the results can be analysed and trends identified, enabling us to exploit our strengths, identify our areas for development and explore the opportunities.
Each participating business will receive individual feedback from their customers and we will all receive generic feedback. From a brief perusal of the forms, I already notice a lack of knowledge about the free parking areas on Saturday, confirming our views about publicity and signage?
Publicity
The launch will be publicised in this week’s Maldon and Burnham Standard.
Next week it will be publicising the prize giving which takes place at 3.00pm on Friday, 27 May at The Emporium (as it is donating first prize). All other donors are welcome to attend (Tricia from Finale and Barry from Mac Theatre). Each month this will provide a promotional opportunity for all donors.
We received further publicity when Keith Brown from the Federation of Small Businesses and I were invited to an interview on BBC Essex’s Dave Monk ‘s morning show on 24 May 2011. You can listen again on <http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/console/p00gqh5k>
Next steps
We need to confirm our plans for the next three months, confirming prize draws and incentives, so they can be publicised in advance. Although we’re all busy and prefer to communicate electronically, I think this calls for an Ideas Meeting and suggest an afternoon meeting on either Wednesday, 8 June or Friday, 10 June, location to be confirmed. We will also have the feedback from the first survey which we can present. Please let me know your preferred date and time.
Jenny and I will draw up a plan to canvass the other independent shops, including restaurants and pubs, followed by a campaign to get the nationals to join in.Once we’ve built a head of steam, we can approach non-retail businesses.
